Mend Maytag LAT8306AAE Washer Agitate Noise

Why won't my Maytag washer agitate even though it spins and drains?

I have a Maytag washer purchased in 1996 model LAT8306AAE. The machine fills with water properly but when it is full and should start agitating, all it does is emit a loud buzzing noise from the control panel. If I advance the dial to spin, the machine drains and spins just fine so the motor seems ok. Could it be the timer?
