How do I fix my Whirlpool washer, it will not agitate?

Put your washer into the spin mode if you already haven't and if you hear the same kind of noise, you probably have a broken motor coupling. It has two pieces with three pins and one piece with holes that the pins go through. This is about a 12 dollar part and fairly easy to change out. Remove the cabinet. Then remove the two clips off the pump and push it out of the way. Finally, remove the motor and you'll see the coupling at the rear end of the motor shaft. and the other piece is on the gearcase. Once you open the washer cabinet you will probably see black shavings from a bad coupling under the washer. Hope this helps and here are instructions on cabinet removal.


The whole cabinet is removed in one piece. Start by removing the plastic endcaps (if you have them) on your console. Once these are removed, remove the screws to the console and pull the console towards the front slightly then flipping it back. Under the console you will see the lid switch connector, unplug it. Stick a flat screwdriver into the clips and push handle toward the rear of the washer to release the clips. Once those are out stand in front of the washer grab the middle and side of the cabinet and rock it toward you and place it out of the way.
