Craftsman mower 917376290 leaking fuel self propelled?

Have not used the above lawn mower Eager 1 6.0 hp 22" in about 5 yrs. Replaced spark plug and oil, added gas. When pulling to start, gas is spraying out left side. Whole tank emptied out. What do you suggest is problem?
