How can I get my Craftsman 18.5 HP model 917.273643 running?

Lawn tractor will start if I spray starting fluid into the intake. Stops when spray is gone. Fuel runs freely to fuel pump. Also, if I feed gasoline directly into the carburetor (via fuel line after the pump), the motor runs until I stop feeding in fuel (therefore carburetor is clean). I replaced the fuel pump (and fuel filter). This did nothing to change the problem. Any help?

i know your post is older, but i had the same problem did the same diagnostics you did. the outcome was that the fuel line routing colaped in one of the many turns the manufacture had routed it i replaced the fuel line buy removing the body of the tractor pulled the gas tank (the access to the gas line is inaccessable without pulling the body and gas tank off) and re-routed a new line to the filter. big pain in the ass. but it worked.
