Could be water level sensing. A lot use pressure, a small diameter pipe will run from the outlet pipe at base of drum, to a sensor unit above the drum. If the m/c still thinks it has water in, it will continue to try and empty it. You will need to get to the pressure sensor, a unit about 3 inches diameter to ward top of m/c usually to the front, it will have a small pipe running to it, as well as a couple of wires. You need to clear the pipe, unplug it from the unit and blow down it, or use something to force air or water down it, possibly blocked with soap at the bottom end. IF the pipe is clear, and still does it, possibly the pressure unit faulty. IF you have a test meter, connect across it, and slight blowing into where the tube goes, should switch it on and off.
