Mend Craftsman Propelled Mower

How can I fix a Craftsman self propelled mower drive mechanism?

My 10yr old Craftsman self-propelled mower can not be pulled backward. The wheels and gear mechanism lock up, and the self-propelled mechanism kicks in, without having the handle engaged. What is causing this, and how do I fix it? Is it worth taking to a shop?

Sorry- It is a rear wheel drive. I have already taken the back cover off, and can see the mechanism, but cannot understand how to get it apart/stop it.

Theres a cover in front of the mower on top ..take the screws out and inspect .....
