I put on a new belt on a craftsman model 917.376572 power propelled mower and it seems too big. How do you adjust the pulley to engage the belt?

It turns out the screw, which is plastic cover, on the protective cover goes to the side of the belt making kind of an S. The manual didn't say anything about that.
