how can I tune my sony dvd rdr-hxd770 recorder?

my sony dvd rdr-hxd770 recorder is connected to the tv through a humax freesat box. They are correctly wired up. I can play dvds without any problems but I cannot record a tv programme on the hard drive and play it back. Tuning the sony using the manual is beyond me. Please help.
