Mend Switch Replaced Fine

What could cause new switch to not work? ?

Replaced dimmer switch about 4 months ago. It has worked fine until now. Fixture will not turn on, but light on switch itself is on (not as bright as usual). Tried a regular switch. It turned fixture on for about 2-3 seconds and now does not work. What could be causing this ?

You seem sure the problem is with the switch - is there any possibility the fault could be with the light fitting or wiring?
