Problem with Electrolux ESL 424 Dishwasher?

Hi, my Electrolux ESL 424 would not fill with water.
I have replaced the solenoid and it now fills with water, but that is as far as it goes. I can empty the machine by moving the selector on to the next stage but it will not run the wash cycle. There seemed to be a crackling sound and a smell of burning that I heard when it was filling with water so I kept the side panel open, however I can find no obvious cause for this. Any ideas/ sugestions would be appreciated.
