Mend AEG 4040 Dishwasher Problem Longer

AEG 4040 dishwasher water softener/salt dispenser problem?

The salt dispenser no longer fills with water and the salt level stays the same. I suspect that the water softener has stopped working as it only washes properly with the more exotic 4 in 1 tablets. Could it be a blockage or do the softeners fail like this and have to be replaced? If so does anyone know how much it would be as a spare part please?
