Mend Mitsubishi Gears Car Reverse

gears don't engage properly?

Hi have a mitsubishi spacestar and when putting the car into first u have to lift the reverse button for it to go into gear and then to get it into reverse u have to push hard to get it past first,it's like they're not lined right,is there any way of correcting this.
