How to override continuing programme message - How can i fix hoover 1600 AA?

The cycle stopped 3/4 of the way through and the phrase 'continuing programme' came up. It will not do anything now. The drum will open and there is a little bit of water in it. I've tried to reset the programme by switching off but still comes up 'continuing programme' when switched back on.
