have just replaced rear brake shoe's and handbrake cable a week ago, had drum on and off to get to bind point at time of reassemble. Handbrake was adjusted. Handbrake now needs readjusting as it is not holding on one side could this be the the automatic adjuster not working. if so how can this be be sorted.

did you let adjustment on handbrake off before adjusting in drum?if not then spring on cable in drum may be coilbound when handbrake is on, [will still feel like a good handbrake but wont be pulling shoes on !

There is no manual adjuster: this is done automatically on two small pivoted flat gears with a small spring. I have had the brakes off again, and found one of the teeth on the spring loaded gear is damaged. I am now waiting for a replacement.

if the adjustment is miles out you can do these by hand,remove the lower grommet at bottom of back plate,get a screwdriver and adjust by turning adjuster up the way on both sides,take it you checked these were nice and free when you had brakes stripped.
