how to wind back brake caliperback when changing pads?

i have a 2litre ford mondeo t.d.ci saloon 52 reg and need to replace the rear brake pads.after removing the wheel and old pads the caliper needs windingor pushing back in so that there is room to put the new brake pads.how do i do this ? do i need a special tool or can i use a screw driver or open ended spanner /

sometimes get away with long nosed pliers but they can be tight,there is a special wind back tool on the market which would be the way to go but try and persevere and give it a go
