Mend Volkswagen GLI 2001 Door Lock

2001 VW Gti door lock failure?

My battery went dead recently, and I used my key by putting it into the driver's door lock and turned it. well something broke, so I can no longer use the master key physically, ie only electronically, to open the door. Do I need to take the door apart? did I break little bits on the lock mechanism? or will I get lucky and just reattach something.
