What do they mean by running gear?

Usually means wheels/tyres/suspension/steering/brakes. There may be some wear in some suspension bushes/balljoints, hard to say but don`t feel bad about asking them exactly what they found, I`m sure they would help you out with a detailed explanation.

You could always ask your friend who gave you this advice.
You might also consider picking wiser friends.

Running Gear means the things that move (rotate) and there are too many to list - quite why they should all need to be replaced at the same time is a mystery - quite how your friend knows that they will need attention is also a mystery. If your friend really knows then the friend will be able to supply the list for you.

I think you are being teased - either that or your friend wishes to win some business from you.

Or perhaps your friend is suggesting that you need to get new exercise clothes.
