what part of the starter motor shall i tap gently to try and free it up so i can get it to a garage to get the problem sorted out and its exact location please help ha ha
now we can help. its fitted to gearbox [looking towardsfront of engine about 11 o'clock.] usually dual mass flywheel debris causes it to stick/fail if there is plenty of debris in starter pinion then your dual mass flywheel will need changing--now you can get a solid flywheel kit. hope it helps

you mean location of starter motor? well its usually on engine fitted so it engages with flywheel ring gear but may be fitted to gearbox so it too engages with flywheel but on some very old vehicles may be part of flywheel called a dynastarter......unless you give vehicle details it could be anywhere?

Anywhere on the outer case.
If van is manual gearbox with ignition OFF put it in second or third gear and push vehicle back or forward a short distance this may also free starter up.
Hope vans not too big.
