Mend Toshiba A40 System Working Bought

no operating system working?

I have just bought a second hand toshiba a40 but the xp system was fraudulent so i tried to install ubuntu but cannot get anywhere with it.I would appreciate any clues as how to get this machine up and running again. many thanks. jock grubb
