repairing lift lever on john deere lawn mower?

how do i fix the lift lever. it does not lock in any posotion

I am having a problem with my LX277 JD Lawn tractor. I took the snow blower off and moved the lift assist spring tention back to 42 inch mower deck. I go to load the deck and the lift lever locks all the way back, push button to push forward and lock and the lever won't lock? it comes back to the driver? what do i need to do to loosen this up so i can load the deck?
