John Deere 2040s pick up hitch ?

Pick up hitch will not lift sufficiently to disengage the lock.

Is there any adjustment / setting up that can be done? Or am I doing something wrong?

I have adjusted the two lugs on the end of the pick up plates and the hitch now works. However they need to be screwed in to the maxium allowable to acheive this. Is this a sign of excessive wear somewhere or even failing hydraulics?
