How to jump a starter?

24HP Craftsman riding mower 917.273220 will not turn/start when key is switched on. New battery, good fuse, lights come on but no clicking sound. Told to check starter/solenoid by "jumping".
How do you jump a starter and what do you use to do so?

To Jump The Starter use a set of jumper cables place the black lead on negative of the battery and take the red lead to the screw on the side of the starter make sure the key is in the run position. be prepared because it will probally spark when you toiuch it to the starter
