Mend Paloma Damage Water Pipe

repairing frost damage on paloma water heater?

i have a one inch split in the copper water pipe. the pipe seems to be 11 mm od. has anyone any guidance for making a repair. my attempts at soldering so far have been only partly successful and rather messy!
