Zig zag?

Our Kenmore model 385.1664180 won't zig zag. When sewing, the needle won't go right of centre. Is the machine faulty, or are we doing something wrong?

I should add that when moving the needle manually, it will go to the right of centre. It is only when using the foot pedal that the needle won't go.
