Mend Insinkerator 444 Turns Time Works

My Insinkerator 444 Garbage disposal only turns on half the time?

My Insinkerator 444 only works intermittently - it doesn't seem to be clogged (nothing I can see, the motor turns freely using hex key on the bottom side of the unit). When I hit the on switch, it's a guess as to whether or not it will come on. When it does come on, it works well. When it doesn't come on, there is a short "poof" noise and then nothing.

I suspect the brushes (electrical contacts) are going bad on the motor. It's not a repairable item.
