problems with picture Sony kd32dx40u?

We have bought a second hand Sony kd32dx40u. It was working fine when we picked it up. It has been stored in our spare room for 4/5 weeks now when we set it up we have the following problems;
- remote and tv do not communicate. We have changed the batteries in the remote and it still does nothing. The light on the remote comes on when you pres the TV/dvd button in the middle!
- when tv first turned on the standy light on the front changes from green to red in a irregular pattern
- we can change channels using the pop out bit on the side of the TV but each channel is a bluey/greeny/yellow swirl of colours. They do have a channel number shown top right and text top left e.g. BBC1, but this also states the channel is not tuned in correctly. This text is black, but blurred
- we have plugged a dvd player into both scart sockets in the back of the tv but all we get is sound and a blank (black) screen, with green text indicating the AV channel number and two speakers

Can anyone advise what might be going wrong
