My simpson esprit 450 will not turn on?

I bought a second hand washing machine from a friend and have used it without many problems for the last two weeks. But now the washing machine will not start - I have checked the power points and another appliance works on those; the lid switch also appears fine, and the water taps are on.

Help???

How do you know the lid switch is okay? How did you test it? When you close the lid slowly, can you hear the switch click just before the lid is fully closed & click again when you open the lid?
