This question seems to be in the tumble dryer section, but from what you say i presume we are talking about a washing machine here. There are a number of faults that can cause this problem, and repairs can range from cheapish to expensive. A common culprit for this symptom is a faulty door switch. Try this, remove any clothes in the machine and close the door, instead of starting at the begining of a wash cycle go straight to the spin setting, switch on and see what happens. If the machine works o.k. then it may be that the solenoid valve that opens to let the water into your machine is faulty. If the machine still does nothing, try giving the door a thump at the doorcatch side with your knee, if it suddenly starts to work after that then it's a doorswitch fault. Hotpoint/Creda machines can be bad for needing to give the door a bump to get them going however they can last for years like that. If none of this works then you could have a programer/module fault, (expensive), or maybe even just a loose wire somewhere, you would really need someone to come in to test the machine and isolate the fault. Good luck.
