How do I prevent the presser bar?

How do I prevent the presser bar from dropping down 3-4 times before staying up? It's a 20 year old Kenmore that I love. Model 385.

Hello Sandra,
The most common fault and the only one I know of is that there is too much pressure on the presser bar, loosen off the screw or dial on the top a bit and you may find you have cured the problem.
