With dryer switched off, see if you can rotate the drum by hand. If it is very tight or jammed, maybe the motor is overheating, trying to turn it. If motor runs and drum not turning, broken belt. You can also get a burnt smell if there is a buildup of dust and lint around the heating element.

I WOULD UNPLUG UNIT AND REMOVE BACK COVER TO SEE IF DRIVE BELT IS STILL IN PLACE OR BROKEN.
