Mend Peugeot 406 Gear Lever Model

Peugeot 406 gear lever?

The gear lever in my 1998 model Peugeot 406 Diesel Saloon has suddenly become very loose. The lever no longer travels in an 'H' pattern but moves like 'I am stirring a pot of porridge'. Has something broken in the linkage causing this to happen?? Can you help ? Would appreciate an early reply.
