Mend Maytag Fabric-Matic Washer Belt Noise

what could be wrong...maytag fabric-matic washer?

My washer was running fine, then it started to make a high pitched squeeling noise and smelling like it was smoking. What could cause that, and how do I get it open to check the belt, etc.? Thanks.
