LG 1480FHD washer tries to turn but just makes a screeching?

The machine seems to function okay other than this. The drum will not turn but just makes a screeching noise when the machine is in operation - if it was a belt drive you would think that the belt was slipping. The drum turns by hand okay. Whilst trying it, I managed to get it to turn one way with the wet cloths removed but was still noisy but failed to turn the opposite way. Now it just doesn't turn. Any ideas??? Many thanks Mark
