Mend Really Key Start

really have to push key in barrel to start?

really have to push key in barrel to start, putting the key in turn the key all lights come on but wont start,but if i takr the key out and keep put it back in while still pushing in then tun the key while pushing in it starts anyone no how to fix this

on some vehicles there is a connecting link between ignition switch and the ignition barrel, switch may be held on by screws,if so undo and remove switch to access the connector and check to see if it is broken. [remove battery lead for safety whilst checking]
