what can be wrong with my 1999 mitsubishi eclipse?

Theres times when it dont start up.i had to push start it .for a while now when i drive on the freeway i would have to hold the gear in place or it would pop off gear. Now not only that i was driving and the car just turned off had to pull over and thats were its at now .not battery.checked that .some say coil.tryed changeing that .but bought it at a used car parts yard.that is all i know about this .i know nothing about cars please help.
