I fixed this problem!
Decided to try to check pump and outlet hose, but could not work out how to do it from various posts on blogs. The "Inspection Hatch" is almost useless - yes I can see the Water Pump, but that's about it. The hose runs out the back of the water pump then up to where it exits the machine housing (back top left corner). I managed to find a Service Manual online (http://www.angelsnz.net/ZL3SV/misc/F&P%20Service%20manual%20517735.pdf) and used this to complete the job. Machine back together, but it was a BIG job - Lid & machine top off, Manually empty water, Inner bowl out (really difficult since machine 20yo & drive spline did NOT want to come off - or go back on)...finally inspect top of pump. Very difficult to get to hose without upending machine! So I rigged up a hose and blasted water through the outlet near the pump in the bottom of the outer wash bowl.
This job was fiddly and took hours, but very do-able if you can read a manual, use a screw driver and have some trouble-shooting & problem-solving skills. Very satisfying when the machine 1. Still worked! 2. Empties water.
Found fur/hair/muck, a safety pin and a wire from an under wire bra all around the top of the pump, in particular the impellor. Lots of muck flushed from hose also.
