Mend Ford Focus Engine Driving

my 2004 ford focus revs high when driving?

When I am driving my car, the engine seems to reving too high, when I increse my speed it revs up but as soon as I take my foot off the gas pedal for a couple of seconds or so it seems to sort it self out, thenit goes back to reving high, would could the problem be??
