lawnflite mower hard to engage gears?

lawnflite 8hp ride on, very hard to get in or out of gears when engine is running.I used to be able to engage or disengage gears easy even without using the clutch. Now it is nearly impossible without turning the motor off first. It also seems slow in travel[speed]
