how can i fix my father's tractor,not sure about the make and model ?

my father bought a john deere tractor in 1989, he have been using it for many years with out any problems, about 8 years back it gave him problems and he could not fix it because of financial problems untill now but i want to fix it now,can it be fixed and how much can it cost?if i sell it,who can buy it and for how much?
