Mend MTD Replace Figure Broken

How do I replace pull cord on MTD gas edger?

I have got the assembly open but I cannot figure out how to pull the old broken cord out and insert the new one. It has some type of plastic thing that I can't figure out how to release the old cord. I don't think it is held by a knot.
