Mend Peugeot 306 Smell Inside Car

how can i fix the lid which holds fuelpump on the tank of a peugeot 306?

i can smell fuel inside my car a peugeot 306 fuel injection, i later found out that the lid which holds the fuel pump on the tank is not secured properly i tried to fix it but the lid seems smaller it tightens one side and the other side will be up, is there a trick please help
