top thread problem jones machine?

my jones machine top thread keeps breaking i have flat side of needle towards me when sewing is this correct please help not sure how to thread it either as it was mums machine and she is no longer with us

Hello Annie,
If thw bobbin case is facing you then the flat side of the needle faces back and you thread the machine front to back, if the bobbin case goes in sideways then the flat side of the needle faces right and you thread the machine left to right.
