Mend Citroen Xantia 1.8 Engine Cut Out

fix engine cut out?

when start car unless i keep revs up and if brake engine cuts out not all the time but it "cures" itself as quickly it starts i have a 1999 citreon xantia 1.8 petrol any ideas what causes this?
