Peugeot 206cc Roof not working fully?

My Peugeot 206cc retractable roof is not working fully. When putting it down it works fine, but on putting it back up the process works until the boot lid is supposed to go back down then it just gets stuck in the upright position. Have taken it to a mechanic and they have said that it is the cables and they cost £180 a pair and i need 4 so this and labour will cost £500 this seems extreme and besides can't afford in and also neither i nor them are fully convinced this will work. Any ideas gratefully received.
