rebuild my craftsman 5 hp lawnmower?

I believe the lawnmower has taken a cr*p .Weve had trouble w/ it for a while .burns oil and never really turns as fast as it should .this weekend ran it dry with oil and now its making a very loud pinging,or ticking sound .Im very mechanically inclined and full of tools .Unfornunately ive never rebuilt , repaired a small gas engine .If you could please send me some literature regarding this i would greatly appreciate it . thank you
