what makes a shaft stop spinning when any pressure is applied?

I have a troy Built gas string trimmer/brush cutter and the motoer runs the shaft spins until I add an attachment. How do i fix that?

There is a spring in the shaft where the motor shaft attaches to the flexable shaft. Make sure it is in place. The best way to check where it is located is to go to the mfg. site and find a parts diagram. You can also order if need be.
