Mend Volkswagen Golf GTI Gti 8v

vw golf gti 1996 8v? poss gearbox problem?

High mileage 154k all forward gears ok although clutch has a little shudder.reverse has a loud clunking noise bit like a driveshaft noise (sounds terrible).any ideas
