Gear box noise on golf gti 8v 1996?

Just bought a 1996 golf gti 8v all forward gears are fine although some clutch shudder,the problem is in reverse....loud clunking noise?? any ideas

I also have a vauxhall vectra (w) 2000 1.8 16v
Can anyone tell me where the air idle control valve is located.

The idle stays at 1500 rpm for about 6-10 sec before going back to normal idle?

Checked gearbox oil level, thats all good have opted for a recon gearbox,second hand one to risky. a recon one is£600 my mech will install it for £80. where as its £150 from the supplyers.

Thanx John, Yes when i do coast around corners i get that wine
quite loud to say the least,i will check the oil level to see. apparently you can top up the oil from a sensor on the top of the gearbox with a small funnel, my machanic showed me.

Possibly a new gearbox is in order esp as the noise is loud!

There's a bit too much gear backlash here....not much you can really do, but check the oil level, look for leaks and keep an ear open for it getting worse. Its usually the differential gears that whine on these, and you may notice a change in sound when you coast around corners.
