i have a renault magane 1.4 automatic it will revers but wont drive what is my problem

Probably a band broken. Its on in first and second. To move forward, hold lever slightly out of drive, it takes a couple or seconds then it will go into limp (3rd). If you manage to get up to speed of where third comes in, the lever can be released and go on to fourth.
