hotpoint 7841 dishwasher sticking on wash cycle?

my 15 year old dishwasher is sticking on the wash cycle- it moves through the rest of the cycle if you turn the switch a bit further, but is making a rather loud 'grinding' noise - any ideas please? Is it worth repairing and can my handyman husband get the parts and do it himself?
